I’m a little late to the game on this one, since the big news hit on Friday night, but in honor of the Pride Parade today I just had to post about marriage equality. For those of you who haven’t heard, NY state passed a marriage equality bill on Friday night, during an emergency extended session of the legislature. This has been a long time coming for NY, and represents a tremendous amount of work done by elected officials, advocacy groups, concerned citizens and of course, Governor Cuomo (and Governor Patterson before him). Thank you so much to everyone who did their part and pitched in to get this historic legislation passed (for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look, check out this article from the New York Times).
As both a long-standing straight ally of the LGBT community, and, of course, a wedding industry professional, marriage equality is an issue near and dear to my heart. Although same-sex couples have long been getting married here in NY despite the legal issues (I’m currently planning a same-sex wedding for the fall that was in the works long before this bill came up for a vote), I’m so excited to see an explosion in same-sex weddings, much the same way that weddings took off in California before the passage of Prop. 8. New York weddings are about to get even more awesome…stay tuned!
